Nasal Septal Perforation Closure

A nasal septal perforation is an abnormal hole or opening in the nasal septum—the cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils.
This condition can result from trauma, infections, previous nasal surgeries, or prolonged use of nasal medications.
Perforations may cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing, nasal dryness, bleeding, whistling sounds, and general discomfort.

What Is the Goal of the Surgery?

The primary objective of this surgery is to close the perforation, restore normal nasal function, and prevent further complications. Specifically, the surgery aims to:

Improve breathing by restoring normal airflow and reducing nasal discomfort.

Reduce symptoms such as bleeding, dryness, and pain.

Reconstruct the nasal anatomy, preserving or enhancing the structural integrity of the septum.

Benefits of the Surgery

Enhanced nasal function – restoring proper airflow and improving quality of life.

Prevention of future complications – including chronic infections, bleeding, and crusting.

Aesthetic results – maintaining the nose’s natural appearance.

Who Is a Candidate for the Surgery?

This procedure is appropriate for patients who:

Experience persistent symptoms that do not respond to conservative (non-surgical) treatments.

Desire both functional and aesthetic restoration of the nasal septum.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The operation is done under general or local anesthesia, depending on the case complexity:

Surgical access: The surgeon accesses the perforation through the nasal cavity.

Tissue grafting: Autologous tissues (such as cartilage or skin) are used to cover and repair the perforation.

Suturing: Delicate stitches are placed to ensure a stable and lasting result.

Nasal packing or splints: Special materials may be inserted to support healing and protect the repair site.

Recovery and Outcome

Recovery time: Typically takes between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on healing response.

Follow-up: Regular checkups are required to monitor healing and ensure the success of the repair.

Temporary symptoms: Mild swelling or nasal congestion may occur but generally resolve quickly.
